Alphabet Inc. is the holding company for Google and a portfolio of separate technology businesses described as Other Bets. Google generates substantially all of Alphabet's revenue and operating profit, primarily through digital advertising on Search, YouTube, and the broader display and partner network, with substantial and growing contributions from Google Cloud, Google subscriptions (YouTube Premium, YouTube TV, Google One), Pixel hardware, and Android licensing.

Google Search remains the world's dominant general-purpose search engine and the single largest digital advertising property by revenue. Search has been the structural foundation of Google's business since the company's founding in 1998. The integration of generative AI into Search through AI Overviews and Gemini-augmented results is the most consequential product change in Search's history and central to Alphabet's defense of the franchise against AI-native search competitors.

YouTube is the largest global video platform, monetizing through advertising on long-form, short-form (Shorts), and creator content. YouTube TV (live television subscription bundle), YouTube Premium (ad-free subscription), and YouTube Music compose a substantial recurring subscription business that complements advertising. Creator economy infrastructure (monetization, analytics, livestreaming) is core platform investment.

Google Cloud is the third-largest hyperscale cloud platform, behind AWS and Azure. Google Cloud has invested heavily in AI infrastructure and is the only major cloud platform with first-party frontier AI silicon at scale: the Tensor Processing Unit (TPU) family, which has powered Google's internal AI workloads since 2015 and is increasingly offered to external customers. Gemini, the company's frontier model series, runs on TPU and is integrated across Google products and offered through Vertex AI for enterprise developers.

Alphabet's AI strategy is structurally distinctive in that the company controls every layer of the stack: foundation models (Gemini, developed by Google DeepMind), custom AI silicon (TPU), data center infrastructure, the cloud platform (Google Cloud), distribution (Search, YouTube, Android, Workspace), and consumer applications (Gemini app, AI Overviews, Google Photos). This vertical integration is the strategic counterpart to Microsoft's partnership-based AI distribution model.

Android is the operating system on the majority of smartphones globally outside of Apple's iOS. Google licenses Android freely while monetizing through Google Play store revenue, default search placement, and integration with Google services. Pixel is Google's first-party hardware brand, used both as a high-margin product line and as a reference implementation that demonstrates Google's silicon, software, and AI integration to the broader Android ecosystem.

Other Bets includes Waymo (autonomous vehicle technology, operating commercial driverless ride-hail in multiple U.S. cities), Verily (life sciences), X (the moonshot factory), and various other early-stage technology investments. Other Bets has historically run at a meaningful operating loss as a portfolio of long-horizon technology bets.

The principal regulatory exposures include U.S. antitrust litigation around Search default placement and the digital advertising stack, European Union digital regulation under the Digital Markets Act and Digital Services Act, and ongoing data and competition regulation globally.

Alphabet's customer base spans every major segment of digital and physical economic activity. Advertisers from small businesses to global enterprises buy Search ads, YouTube ads, and display network inventory; this is the largest revenue category. Consumers use Search, YouTube, Maps, Gmail, Drive, Workspace, Android, and Pixel hardware globally. Google Cloud enterprise customers include Fortune 500 enterprises (Walmart, HSBC, PayPal), large native cloud consumers (Spotify, Snap, Twitter/X historically), AI labs (Anthropic, character.ai, and others use Google Cloud TPU), and public sector buyers. Google Workspace serves enterprise productivity customers as the Microsoft 365 alternative. Developers consume Google's APIs, Android, Firebase, and Google Cloud platform services. Creators monetize through YouTube's partner program. Governments at every level use Google products and Google Cloud, particularly for compute-intensive AI and large-scale data workloads.

Google went public on NASDAQ on August 19, 2004, at $85 per share through a Dutch auction process. The company restructured as Alphabet Inc. in October 2015, with Google becoming a subsidiary.
What is Gemini?
Gemini is Alphabet's frontier model family, developed by Google DeepMind. Gemini is integrated across Google's consumer products (AI Overviews in Search, Gemini app, Google Workspace), offered to enterprise developers through Vertex AI on Google Cloud, and runs natively on Google's TPU silicon. Gemini is the structural anchor of Alphabet's vertically integrated AI strategy.
What is a TPU?
TPU (Tensor Processing Unit) is Alphabet's family of custom AI accelerator chips, developed internally and used to train and serve Google's AI workloads since 2015. TPUs are now offered to external Google Cloud customers, including AI labs such as Anthropic that train models at TPU scale. The TPU program predates the hyperscaler custom silicon trend by nearly a decade and is the most mature first-party AI silicon among the hyperscale cloud platforms.
Who are Alphabet's main competitors?
In digital advertising, Alphabet competes with Meta and Amazon. In cloud infrastructure, Google Cloud competes with AWS and Azure. In foundation models, Gemini competes with OpenAI's GPT, Anthropic's Claude, and Meta's Llama. In productivity, Google Workspace competes with Microsoft 365. In mobile, Android competes with Apple's iOS. In autonomous vehicles, Waymo competes with Tesla, Cruise, and various Chinese AV programs. In short-form video, YouTube Shorts competes with TikTok.
What is Google DeepMind?
Google DeepMind is the unified AI research and product organization formed in 2023 by combining Google Research's Brain team and the DeepMind research lab Alphabet acquired in 2014. DeepMind develops Gemini and conducts foundational research across reinforcement learning, biology (AlphaFold), and broader AI capabilities. The integration unified Alphabet's previously distinct AI research efforts under a single leadership structure.

The Power Delivery Gap

The interconnection queue holds more than 1,100 GW of power. The grid delivers renewables quickly and firm gas slowly, if at all. A model of what the US grid can actually deliver, and when, built on MLQ's queue and generator data.
