Google expands SynthID and confirms OpenAI, Nvidia and others as watermarking partners
- Google said it is expanding SynthID verification for AI-generated media from the Gemini app to Search immediately, with Chrome support to follow in the coming weeks.[3][7]
- OpenAI, Nvidia, Kakao and ElevenLabs are adopting SynthID to watermark AI-generated content, according to Google.[3][7]
- Google said SynthID has already been used to watermark more than 100 billion images and videos and 60,000 years of audio, while the Gemini app has used verification 50 million times globally.[7]
- SynthID embeds imperceptible signals in images, video, audio and text, and Google says the system is designed to work alongside C2PA Content Credentials.[4][6][7]
Google is broadening the use of its SynthID watermarking system and extending verification tools to Search, while naming OpenAI, Nvidia, Kakao and ElevenLabs among companies adopting the technology for AI-generated media.[3][7]
Expansion of verification tools
Google said users will be able to check whether images, audio and video were created with Google AI tools through SynthID verification in Search, with Chrome support planned in the coming weeks.[3][7] The company had already made verification available in the Gemini app for image, video and audio content.[7] Google also said SynthID verification can help identify AI-generated content across different media types in one place.[2]
Companies adopting SynthID
Google said OpenAI, Nvidia, Kakao and ElevenLabs are among the companies adopting SynthID watermarking.[3][7] The tool embeds imperceptible signals into AI-generated content so that it can later be detected by Google’s verification tools.[4][6] Google has not said in the material provided whether the companies are using SynthID in all products or only in selected workflows.
How SynthID works
SynthID was created by Google DeepMind and embeds digital watermarks directly into AI-generated images, audio, text or video.[4][6] Google says the watermark is designed to be imperceptible to people while remaining detectable by software, even after sharing or transformations such as edits or compression.[2][6] Google has also released SynthID Text as open source for developers.[4]
Usage figures and rollout
Google said more than 100 billion images and videos and 60,000 years of audio have already been watermarked with SynthID.[7] The company added that verification in the Gemini app has been used 50 million times globally.[7] Google DeepMind also operates a SynthID Detector portal for early testers, including journalists, media professionals and researchers, to scan content for watermarks.[2][6]
