Apple modem displacement. Apple's C1 modem launched in the iPhone SE in February 2025 and the second-generation Ganymede chip with mmWave capabilities is expected in the iPhone 17 lineup for 2026.²⁴²⁵ Bloomberg's reporting (December 2024) described Apple's roadmap as targeting competitive parity with Qualcomm by 2027.²⁴ Qualcomm disclosed being in 3 of 4 iPhone models in Apple's FY2025 phone cycle. Full Apple exit represents an estimated $5.7–7.8B annual revenue risk.²⁶ This transition is in progress, unambiguous in direction, and the most cited single factor for the valuation discount.
China revenue concentration. China accounted for approximately 62% of Qualcomm's total revenues in FY2023 ($22.4B).¹⁰ The licensing and chipset businesses are both deeply exposed to Chinese OEM purchasing and royalty payments. US export restrictions on advanced semiconductors, retaliatory Chinese import tariffs, or further deterioration in bilateral technology trade relations could impair both QCT chip shipments and QTL royalty collections. The Huawei license, currently under renewal discussions, represents a specific unquantified upside or downside depending on resolution.¹⁵
DRAM supply chain volatility. Management attributed the full Q2 FY2026 guidance shortfall ($7.8B to $6.0B in handset revenue) to DRAM availability, specifically as memory suppliers redirect manufacturing capacity toward HBM for AI data centers.¹⁴ This dynamic — AI capex diverting memory from consumer electronics — may persist through fiscal H2 2026 and is largely outside Qualcomm's ability to influence directly.
Automotive execution risk. The $8B FY2029 automotive target requires sustained ~23% annual revenue growth from the current run-rate. Automotive development cycles are long; OEM start-of-production delays, software stack integration issues, or competitive displacement by NVIDIA DRIVE or Mobileye in ADAS could push revenue timing further out. The Volkswagen Group letter of intent — while significant — has not been disclosed as a definitive binding contract.¹⁴
Data center competition. Qualcomm enters the AI inference market as a challenger against NVIDIA (dominant), AMD, Google TPUs, and Amazon Trainium. The company has provided only high-level performance framing without published benchmarks; the H1 2026 investor update carries execution and credibility risk. Data center revenue material only from FY2027 means earnings estimates for FY2026 capture essentially no contribution.
QTL licensing disputes. QTL revenues of ~$5.6B annually depend on the renewal and enforcement of license agreements. Adverse regulatory rulings — particularly in China, where domestic OEMs have historically sought to reduce royalty obligations — or a lapse in any major license agreement (including Huawei) would immediately reduce the licensing revenue floor that anchors Qualcomm's high-margin earnings structure.
