Japan Tobacco: Enjoy The Income While Waiting For Growth

Japan Tobacco offers a high 5% dividend yield, ideal for income-focused investors, despite inconsistent annual dividend growth. The stock has appreciated by 7% annually over five years, with total returns of 12% including dividends. Though no growth is expected this year, future dividend growth is expected as the company aims for high single-digit earnings growth.

Japan Tobacco: Look Beyond In-Line Results And Consider Its Favorable Prospects (Rating Upgrade)

I upgrade Japan Tobacco from Hold to Buy, after considering its satisfactory 2024  performance and its positive outlook. JAPAF's 2024 results met expectations with an 8% increase in both its topline and operating income. Price hikes for Camel and WITH brands should boost FY25 earnings, supported by JAPAF's dominant 43% market share in Japan.

Japan Tobacco: The Vector Group Acquisition Impact

Japan Tobacco Inc.'s YTD gains are unsurprising, given its muted profit outlook, high market multiples, and lower dividend yield compared to peers even towards the start of the year. Its recent acquisition of Vector Group raises concerns further about Japan Tobacco's future sustainability as it focuses more on traditional tobacco than next-generation products. The acquisition's cost can also significantly impact earnings, raising the forward P/E ratio and potentially impacting dividends.

Japan Tobacco: It's All About The Yen (Rating Downgrade)

JAPAY's Q2 2024 top line grew by +14.0% YoY and exceeded the consensus projection by +4.6%, thanks to the weakening of the Japanese yen. But it is likely that the Japanese yen could strengthen going forward, and this means that Japan Tobacco's 2H and FY 2024 results are at risk of missing expectations. I lower my rating for JAPAY to a Hold in view of the potential yen appreciation headwind.

Japan Tobacco: Accelerating Growth Justifies A Higher Valuation

Japan Tobacco faces challenges due to regulations and growing awareness of health risks, but the tobacco market continues to grow. New Zealand plans to implement a lifetime ban on tobacco purchasing for young people, but it is unlikely to have a significant effect on global tobacco revenue. Japan Tobacco is undervalued compared to some of its peers, and its growth initiatives and potential share buybacks could boost earnings and dividends.
