The Moment Of Truth For BDC Dividend Investors Is Close

As a structural BDC bull I have to admit that the period of BDCs consistently surprising us on the upside has come to an end. Many lower quality BDCs have already cut their dividends to sync their cash flows with less favorable private credit lending environment. I would say that the moment of truth for high quality BDCs is also very close, where we will see how really durable their base dividends are.

TriplePoint Venture Growth: The Tide Hasn't Turned Yet

TriplePoint Venture Growth's high dividend yield of 16.3% is tempting, but its portfolio's resilience is questionable amid rising non-accruals and declining NAV. Despite reduced debt levels, TPVG's Q4 earnings disappointed with a net investment income of $0.32 per share, missing estimates. The portfolio's concentration in consumer products and services poses risks, especially with ongoing economic uncertainties and higher inflation.

TriplePoint Venture Growth: Is This 16% Yield A Red Flag?

TriplePoint Venture Growth reported weaker-than-expected Q4 earnings due to high non-accruals, leading to a 5.4% decline in net asset value in Q4'24. TPVG's 16% yield is still covered by net investment income, and I am maintaining a buy rating for now. TPVG trades at a 16% discount to NAV due to poor balance sheet quality, significantly underperforming rivals Hercules Capital and Horizon Technology Finance.

TriplePoint Venture Growth: When One Dividend Cut Is Not Enough

I've maintained a bearish stance on TriplePoint Venture Growth (TPVG) since May 2024; the stock has declined ~20% since then. TPVG's dividend is unsustainable despite a recent cut; another dividend reduction is likely this year due to ongoing financial headwinds. In this article I discuss in more details why I remain skeptical on TPVG.

TriplePoint Venture Growth: 15% Yield And Improving Conditions, But Far From Safe Pick

Since the moment, when I issued my first bearish article on TriplePoint Venture Growth, the BDC has underperformed the index by ~37%. Currently, TPVG trades at a 14% discount to NAV and offers, at least optically, covered dividend of ~15.5%. This seems like an interesting opportunity to reconsider the case.

I also share 3 concrete BDC picks, which I could easily see being included in the retirement income mix.

TriplePoint Venture Growth: The Tide May Have Turned (Upgrade)

TriplePoint Venture Growth BDC had a challenging 2024, with a high non-accrual ratio and significant realized losses impacting its stock value and net asset value. Despite these issues, recent improvements in non-accruals and a dividend reset have provided some relief, making TPVG a potential buying opportunity. The tech-focused BDC sector, including competitors like Hercules Capital and Horizon Technology Finance, benefits from a strong capital markets environment, enhancing equity-driven returns.

Huge Yields, Brief Notes

Preferred shares rallied, as predicted. Finding value is getting much harder. There are some common shares trading at discounts. Some big, some tiny. I would be interested in a few of the agency mortgage REITs, but the ones I would prefer remain unavailable. The valuation between those good ones and some of the weaker ones (as measured by things like destruction of shareholder wealth and me not liking them) is still small sometimes.

TriplePoint Venture Growth: Is The 15% Dividend Yield Sustainable?

TriplePoint Venture Growth's 17% dividend yield may be enticing for some investors. They out-earned the upcoming dividend this month with room to spare. I suspect the 17% TPVG yield will remain covered for at least the near term, but I'm still not a buyer.

BDC Weekly Review: Key Q3 Earnings Trends

We take a look at the action in business development companies through the second week of November and highlight some of the key themes we are watching. BDCs were flat this week in aggregate, outperforming other income sectors, with PSEC and TPVG bookending month-to-date returns. Q3 earnings reveal a slight decline in net investment income due to rate cuts, tight market spreads, and refinancing into higher coupon debt.

Investing In BDCs For 10%+ Yields? This Is What Matters Now

When investing for 10%+ BDC yields, investors have to pay extra attention to leverage, dividend coverage, and portfolio quality. Going into Q3, 2024 earnings season, my expectation was that we would see elevated volatility levels and falling NII results. While the actual results have been mostly positive for high-quality BDCs (and even for some speculative picks), many risks remain open.

BDC Weekly Review: Tax-Loss Season Is Approaching

We take a look at the action in business development companies through the second week of November and highlight some of the key themes we are watching. BDCs saw a 2% aggregate return on the week; TPVG surged nearly 20%, while PSEC dropped due to a bad quarter and distribution cut. Tax-loss season may pressure some securities; PSEC, HRZN, TPVG, TCPC, OCSL, GSBD, NMFC, and CSWC could weaken further by year-end.

News image

TriplePoint Venture Growth: Inflection Point (Rating Upgrade)

TriplePoint Venture Growth saw a significant breakout after Q3 results, driven by a major decline in its non-accrual percentage, improving portfolio quality. The BDC's net investment income of $0.35 per-share implied a dividend coverage ratio of 1.17X for its $0.30 dividend. Compared to Q2'24, the coverage situation drastically improved. Improved loan performance and reduced non-accruals have flipped TPVG's risk profile, justifying an upgrade to a buy rating.

News image

TriplePoint Venture Growth: The Worst May Be Over (Rating Upgrade)

I initially issued a sell rating on TriplePoint Venture Growth due to weak net investment income and questionable distribution coverage, but recent Q3 earnings show improvement. TPVG's portfolio strategy focuses on lending to venture capital-backed companies, with a diverse debt portfolio, but remains vulnerable to interest rates. The current dividend yield of 17.6% is attractive for income investors but comes with additional risks compared to peer BDCs.
